Michael Joseph Berklich was born on June 12, 1924 in Hibbing, Minnesota and passed away on August 27, 2017 in Merced, California, where he was a resident of 61 years.
Michael was an insurance underwriter and agent for Farmers Insurance for 37 years. He was in the United States Army and served in WWII in the 17th Airborne Division as a paratrooper where he was wounded in action an became a P.O.W. and helped engineer his escape alongside other soldiers despite his injuries. Michael Joseph Berklich was born on June 12, 1924 in Hibbing, Minnesota and passed away on August 27, 2017 in Merced, California, where he was a resident of 61 years.
Michael was an insurance underwriter and agent for Farmers Insurance for 37 years. He was in the United States Army and served in WWII in the 17th Airborne Division as a paratrooper where he was wounded in action an became a P.O.W. and helped engineer his escape alongside other soldiers despite his injuries. He was a member of St. Patricks Church in Merced, California and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Elk's, American Legion, D.A.V., a former little league coach, legion baseball coach, O.L.M. golf coach, and introduced slow pitch-softball to the City of Merced. He later was an ardent golfer, bowler, played both semi-pro baseball and slow pitch softball. He was a member of the Merced Country Club for many years. He used to love to fish and hunt alongside his dogs. In recent years he enjoyed working in his yard. His fondest memories are of when he got a hole in 1 and playing a round of golf at the St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland for his 65th birthday.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents Nick and Vera Berklich, his sister Ann Petrich an brothers Matt and John Berklich.
He is survived by his wife Mary Berklich of 69 years, his children Patty (Dennis) Poulsen, David (Nora) Berklich, Kathy (Scott) Aldern, and Mick (Gail) Berklich, his brother Joe Berklich of Hibbing, Minn. Along with four grandchildren Lisa, Amy, Alex, Amy and one great grandchild, Tristan.
There will be a Prayer/Memorial Service on September 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B. Street, Merced, California. His interment will be held on September 5, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery located at 32053 W. McCabe Road, Santa Nella, California. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to a charity of your choice.
